Tourmaline - Tourmaline's colorful nature and increased availability have led to a tremendous growth in its popularity over the past 20 years. Tourmaline sources include California, Maine, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Africa. Tourmaline is a hard gem that is resistant to both breaking and scratching, but should still be protected against sharp blows and sudden changes in temperature. Because of the natural internal characteristics in tourmalines, they should not be placed in ultrasonic jewelry cleaning machines. Instead, use most any commercial jewelry cleaner or soapy warm water and a soft brush. Always completely dry before wearing. Along with opal, tourmaline is the October birthstone.
